EIGHT BASIC STEPS FOR HANDLING A MOTION
  1. STAND AND ADDRESS THE CHAIR
    a. Rise and address the Chair by saying, "Madame President" or "Madame Chair".
    b. State your name and whom you represent, whether delegate or member.
  2. GAIN RECOGNITION
    The Chair says, "The Chair recognizes _______ . (In meetings, it is customary for the President to use the name of the member desiring recognition.)
  3. MAKE THE MOTION
    The maker says, "I move that..."
  4. SECOND THE MOTION
    "I second the motion." This can be done by any member in good standing, or at District, State or National meetings by any authorized member or the voting body.
  5. THE CHAIR STATES THE QUESTION
    "It has been moved and seconded that . . . .
  6. THE CHAIR ASKS FOR DEBATE OF THE QUESTION
    "Are you ready to discuss the question?"
  7. THE CHAIR PUTS THE QUESTION TO A VOTE
    "It has been moved and seconded that . . ." "All those in favor or the motion, please say, 'Aye'. All those opposed to the motion, please say, 'No'."
  8. THE CHAIR ANNOUNCES THE RESULT OF THE VOTE
    "The motion carried, and you have just voted to ______. OR "The motion lost."
