LEGISLATIVE REPORT 2007

by

Sylvia Brown Olivetti, BPW Isle City Legislation Chair

I was extremely pleased that I was able to represent Isle City at the BPW National Legislative Conference on Thursday, February 8th.

The day started with a brief talk by the National BPW President at the Renaissance Hotel in Washington, DC.  We then boarded buses and went to the Supreme Court for a very informative lecture on the history of the Court, the building and the legal system involving cases before the Supreme Court. We then went to the Hart Senate Office Building for a legislative briefing and luncheon.

I am attaching a number of documents which deal with the three pieces of legislation that BPW is supporting and that we received information prior to our going to Congressional offices.

I visited with one of Congresswoman Barbara Lee's aides and provided her with copies of the letters and information on the following legislation which I asked the Congresswoman to become a sponsor of: S. 1085 -- To provide for paid sick leave to ensure that Americans can address their own health needs and the health needs of their families (Healthy Families Act) -- attached is the legislation introduced last year which will be reintroduced shortly and a BPW letter and fact sheet about the legislation. S. 2278 -- To amend the Public Health Services Act to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases in women (HEART for Women Act) -- attached is the legislation introduced last year which will be reintroduceed shortly and a BPW letter and fact sheet about the legislation. S. 3951 -- To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 and the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 to increase the retirement security of women and small business owners, and for other purposes  -- attached is the legislation introduced last year which will be reintroduced shortly and a BPW letter and fact sheet about the legislation.

All Isle City members, family and friends should write letters in support of these 3 pieces of legislation to Congresswoman Barbara Lee and Senators Boxer and Feinstein.

I am also attaching the following additional information which I believe will be helpful and interesting to everyone: 1.  A telephone directory for all US Senators and Congress people; 2.  Information on the Common Sense Budget Act 3.  Information on the No Child Left Behind Act 4.  Information on Invest in America's Heroes

If anyone has any questions, please contact me. Thanks again for the opportunity to represent Isle City at the BPW Legislative Conference.  I will continue to keep all of you updated on legislation here in Washington as well as in Sacramento.
