National Business Women's Week

Isle City of Alameda Business and Professional Women (Isle City BPW) in recognition of National Business Women's Week announces this year's Women of Achievement and L.E.N.A. Award recipients.

The Award Reception and Ceremony, sponsored by Bank of Alameda, is on Saturday, October 21 from 2-4 p.m., in the Community Room, Harbor Bay Isle Owners Association, 3195 Mecartney Rd , Alameda .

Being honored are:

  • Jan Brown : Woman of Achievement in Business, owner for 19 years of Urban Forest and Bay Station Accents & active in community theatre for 33 years

  • Admiral Jody A. Breckenridge : Woman of Achievement in Military Service, Commander District 11, United States Coast Guard

  • Commander Lisa Avila :  Woman of Achievement in Military Service, Commanding Officer, Navy Operational Support Center Alameda

  • Captain Sharon Oliver : Woman of Achievement in Public Service, Alameda Fire Department for 12 years & Citizen Emergency Response Team training

  • Lu Chen, PhD : Woman of Achievement in Science,  Assistant Professor of Neurobiology, UC Berkeley, and MacArthur Foundation 2006 Genius Grant Winner

  • Kathy Shaughnessy : L.E.N.A. Award*, Assistant Vice President & Business Development Officer at Bank of Alameda, Alameda Chamber of Commerce Ambassador and advocate for Midway Shelter and Alameda Homeless Network

Awardees were selected to recognize women making a difference in our community and in their professions. L.E.N.A. (standing for Leadership, Education, Networking and Achievement) is Isle City 's "Woman of the Year" award named after BPW founder Lena Madisen Phillips.

This year marks the 78th year that the third full week of October is designated National Business Women's Week to honor the contributions of working women throughout the country.  The Alameda City Council is presenting a proclamation declaring October 17 through 23 as National Business Women's Week in Alameda .
