ISLE CITY OF ALAMEDA BPW RECEIVES STATE AWARDS

Marion Yeaw, Phyllis Reaney, Margaret Seaman, Roberta Finch, Genette Beardsley, and Ethel Simon attended BPW California State Convention where Isle City of Alameda swept top award categories.

Member Lisa Lane , a single mother, received a California Education Fund scholarship for commercial pilot training, a nontraditional job field for women.

Isle City members made the second-highest donations of a California local organization to the BPW Foundation, a national scholarship fund. The Silver Foundation Award presented by foundation trustees is dedicated to strengthening the lives of working women. Written on the award is “You cannot hold a torch to light another's path without brightening your own.”

Immediate Past President Marion Yeaw accepted the awards on behalf of the local organization. The Legislation and Public Policy Award included recognition for Isle City 's grass-roots resolution, one of three adopted at the 2003 national convention and made a part of BPW/USA's lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill.

First Place Press Book Award recognized media coverage by a local organization located in a metropolitan area.

First Place in BPW/USA's Community Involvement Award recognized Isle City for varied programs and activities, including distributing pink ribbons during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, donating to domestic shelters and Girls Inc, with special emphasis on Project Africa. This project collects money and goods for a woman's AIDS clinic in Kadoma, Africa .

Both the Legislation and Public Policy Award and the Community Involvement Award will be in competition for a national award at BPW/USA Conference in Fort Lauderdale in July. This is the third time the Isle City local has earned this recognition.

For next year, the local organization is seeking Young Careerist candidates. A YC candidate must be between the ages of 21 and 35, have at least one year of full-time work, and support the goals and objectives of BPW/USA. Candidates do not have to be BPW members.
