YOUNG CAREERIST PROGRAM
The Young Careerist program is BPW's way of recognizing the
accomplishments of successful young career women and men while
introducing them to the ideals and standards of both the
National Federation and the California Federation of Business
and Professional Women.
To be eligible as a Young Careerist candidate, she must be:
- between the ages of 21 and 35, inclusive, by July 31;
- be or have been employed in business or the professions
with at least one year of full-time work experience in
her career area;
- be outstanding in scholastic work, community service,
and/or church work;
- be living, working, training or continuing her
education in the area served by the State Federation; and
- support the goals and objectives and legislative
platform of the National Federation of Business and
Professional Women's Clubs, Inc. of the United States of
America (BPW/USA). (Candidates must review the
National Legislative Platform and pledge they will not
speak against platform items as a Y. C. representative, if
selected).
The above eligibility also applies to State, District and Local
Organization participation.
In searching for Young Careerist candidates, Local Organization
members are afforded the opportunity to have in-depth
conversations with many young women and men both within the L. O. and
within the community. Candidates are not required to join BPW to
participate. These women and men can assist BPW in continuing to be
up-to-date on the changing role of women in society and in the
business and professional world. Y. C. candidates can also
suggest ways in which BPW can serve the interest of young women
in the community.
BPW can, in turn, benefit the Y. C. candidates by providing
observations and insights of women who have years of experience
in the business world--role models and mentors. Also, Y. C.
candidates are provided awareness of resources and programs of
the both the National Federation and the California Federation
which are available for both personal and professional growth.
Participation from the Local Organization level to National
Convention provides interaction between BPW members and Y. C.
candidates that are both instructive and rewarding
experiences for all concerned.
The Young Careerist Program began at the National level in
1963-64 during the presidency of Virginia Allen. The Y.C. Chair
is a National Standing Committee and is mandated as a chairship
at the State level, the District level and the Local
Organization.
